Form 8 (2015)How to Be a Responsible Shopper

How to Be a Responsible Shopper

In today`s world of endless consumer choices, it`s very easy to spend without thinking. Many people enjoy bargain-hunting, but our quest to pay less may have hidden dangers. Being a responsible shopper means to combine an awareness of human rights and green issues, as well as  knowledge how to save our hard-earned cash.

First of all, you should be ethical. You should always choose products labelled “fairtrade”, which is a guarantee the goods have been made under acceptable working conditions.  It means that you can be sure that workers  were not in sweatshops and child labour was not used.

Furthermore, be green. It`s a good idea to choose products  that use fewer natural resources, and avoid goods which come in unnecessary packaging. The goal is not to waste anything. Another great option is buying second-hand. You can find a treasure trove of quality second-hand items which are often much better than cheaply made products for sale at similar prices. Then, of course, buy products that can be recycled. Also, try to recycle your belongings yourself.

Finally, be smart. You should spend your money wisely. It involves some thought and research as well.  Always be clear about what you want to buy to avoid unnecessary purchases. Then, compare prices and take advantage of seasonal retail shifts, when they sell products off at reduced prices.

Lastly, remember the goal of being a responsible shopper. It is not just about trying to spend as little as possible. It is to find a good balance between being ethical, being green and using good money sense.

8 Form (2015)Growing Up

Growing Up

According to UN statistics, by the year 2050, the population of planet Earth will have risen to over 9 billion and feeding all these people will require extra farmland the size of Brazil. The scientists offer the idea of vertical farming.

Vertical farms are a good idea because they don`t take up as much space as traditional farms. That is why, they may be a solution to growing enough food for an increasing population with a lack of farmland. They can be built in cities to allow people to have access to local produce and therefore reduce transport costs. This idea is also environmentally friendly as the farmswill be powered by solar, wind energy and will grow a variety of fruit and vegetables in a solution of nutrients and water. The walls will be made of glass to allow in sunlight. The scientists point out that just one 30-storey building would provide food for 10 000 people.

However, the idea isn`t without its problems. Crops nearer the glass would get more light. That means they would grow quicker than crops farther away. Possible solutions include having a permanent light source on every floor like the ones we now have in industrial greenhouses.

All in all, mankind remembers the stories of The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. There were the structures with lush green gardens on different levels many metres high. These are long gone, but the situation in our modern consumer society isn`t good enough. The population rises and food prices soar. So,it`s a good idea to let a modern-day equivalent of these gardens spring up.

8 Form(2015) Life in the 21st century and in the 1950s

Life in the 21st century is fast-paced and ruled by mobile phones, the Internet and gadgets, so it`s easy to understand why some people long to go back to the simpler times of the past. They like living in a 1950s time warp.

The 1950s were an era of colourful homes, clothes and accessories, black and white TVs, rock and roll music and traditional values. Some people choose to live as people did back then as only cherishing these times is not for them. They use retro decor in their houses which are full of second-hand vintage appliances. They buy authentic metal kitchen units. That`s why their houses look like a 1950s time capsule. What`s more, they try hard to bring the spirit of 1950s into the 21st century. So, they dress like people in 1950s. For example, women in clothes prefer pencil skirts, white blouses and wide belts. They also never leave houses without their bright lipstick on. Furthermore, they appreciate people. That`s why they look after their elderly neighbours and bake cakes for their friends. They avoid watching TV and reading newspapers as all the violence, greed and materialism make them shudder.

However, everybody admits to owning and using some 21st century conveniences. There are a lot of things which can`t be kept out of sight. We have an electric kettle, a fridge, a dishwasher and a microwave in our kitchen. Furthermore, we can`t imagine our life without surfing the Internet. Living without mobile telephones and TV seems bland.

To sum up, every era has its advantages. There is something special in our past while our present life is distressing at times.

Personally, I `d prefer to live in 1950s as I like being in retreat from the 21st century.  I like authentic old things and accessories like trilby hats and stylish suits. In addition, I respect the values of 50s, the “make do and mend” attitude that is so different from our age of throwaway fashion and ever-changing technology.

Personally, I `d prefer a fast-paced life of 21st century. I`m getting used to living with all modern conveniences such as laptops, washing machines and dishwashers. I adore ever-changing technology. Besides, I can`t imagine living without my mobile phone and the Internet as they help me communicate with my friends. I can always send a message to my parents when I have any difficulties.

10 Form (2015) Eating Out

Eating Out

Eating out is becoming more and more popular nowadays.Although, it has some
advantages and disadvantages .

To begin with, there are many reasons why people eat out. There are busy working couples who don’t want to think about preparing a meal and washing up after a long day at work. Then there are single people who don’t like to eat alone and prefer to go out with their friends, or business people who take their clients out for a meal. When people are away on holiday they often eat out and on the whole I’d say eating out is often a form of

entertainment. One of the main reasons many people go out for a meal is to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or an anniversary. Furthermore, some people like to eat out to try different foods from other countries.

There are many advantages to eating out. One advantage is the relaxing atmosphere of a restaurant. It’s a great place to unwind at the end of a busy day. Discussing business over a meal is a way to entertain clients away from the office and also a way to relax and get to know one another. For other people it makes a change from eating at home and it means they can have a choice of what to eat. On the whole, I’d say that having someone

else cook, serve your meal and clear up afterwards is a great reason for eating out. In addition, I think most people would agree that if we want to enjoy food from a different country, it’s best to have it cooked by people from that country and to enjoy it in a restaurant with the right atmosphere as well.

One of the negative points of eating out is that it can be expensive. Sometimes the quality of the food or the service may be poor. The expense is the main reason many people only eat out for special occasions. Of course, unless the restaurant has been recommended, you can’t be sure of the quality of the food or service and it may be disappointing or even disastrous. If a restaurant is popular it can also be noisy. In England,

smoking in restaurants is not allowed but in other countries people smoke in restaurants which is a problem for non-smokers.

As far as I’m concerned, I usually go out to eat with my family about once a month. We like to try new places occasionally, but my favourite place to eat is the Chinese
restaurant; I love eating with chopsticks.

8 Form (2015) Matryoshka dolls

Every country has traditional things, which are typical for its culture. Thinking of the USA everyone remembers jeans, potato chips and Coca-Cola. The story of these thingsgoes back to the past. Nowadays, they are popular all over the world. Jeans are a staple item of clothing in everyone`s wardrobe. What is more, potato chips are among the favourite snacks. Beside this, Coca-Cola remains the most famous soft drink in the world.

Visiting Russia foreigners can try dishes of traditional Russian cuisine such as borsch( that is soup made of beetroot). They can also buy some souvenirs, for example, wooden spoons. They are traditional folk musical instrument. Another famous souvenir is a matryoshka doll. It is very popular. There are a lot of small dolls inside one doll, each one smaller than the other. These wooden dolls are beautifully painted, often in bright colours. At the end of the 19th century in Russia Sava Mamontov was an industrialist and supporter of the arts. One of the artists who worked for him saw a Japanese doll. That doll had other dolls inside it/So, the artist decided to make something similar.SergeiMaliutin designed the doll and VasilyZvyozdochkin carved the 1st one in 1890. The dolls became famous worldwide when they won a prize at an exhibition in Paris in 1900.

All in all, there are fascinating souvenirs in every country. Buying something traditional we cherish our memories and share them with our friends  when we come back home.

8 Form (2015)Module 2 (Shopping)

Module 2 (Shopping)

Going shopping has become a popular pastime of many people. What is more, for some customers shopping in supermarkets has turned into a certain addiction as they spend a lot of money on the things they really don`t need. It happens so because supermarkets try to make their customers buy more using special tricks. Delicious smells, special offers, packaging, product placement, beautiful and colourful displays are intentionally used to tempt us into spending more.

The smell of freshly-baked bread and tempting displays of fresh produce make you feel hungry. Futhermore, no one can resist a “buy one get one free ” deal. It`s also easier to grab some pre-packaged apples. What`s more, supermarkets love moving their produce, so that you have to spend time walking and looking for what you want to buy.

To sum up, it is helpful to know that loose fruit and vegetables are usually cheaper than pre-packaged ones. It is also useful to know that people waste a lot of money buying more than they need because they can`t resist temptation of special offers. I would recommend to remember that and try not to buy at supermarkets extra items that you don`t really need.

10 Form(2015) Sport

They say, “Health is above wealth”. Millions of people consider sports to be very helpful in gaining good health. Sports benefit people in many ways. Generally speaking, it is a great way to keep fit. When you play in a team, you learn how to work together to achieve a common goal. Sports also teach us to deal with both success and failure and how to balance competitiveness. Finally, spots bring people together and they help us to relax.
In my opinion, the most popular sports worldwide are probably football and basketball. Football is played all over the world by all sorts of people. The main advantage of football is that all you require is a ball. Basketball can also be practised anywhere, although you do need hoops to score points. They are both team games and so playing them is a social experience as well
as good exercise. In addition, both of these sports are watched by millions of fans every week, both at matches or on the television.
Sports are very important to my age group because many of us play for our school and college teams and we can spend time with our friends.
Unfortunately, in my area the facilities for playing sports are not very good. In the summer, we can play outside but during the winter months we have to use the local sports centre and it is always very busy. The council is building a new sports hall at the moment, but it will not be finished for another couple of years.
Personally, I enjoy participating in many different sports. My favourites are football, swimming and tennis. I like to play football with my friends most evenings because it is a fun way to spend time together. I swim regularly and it keeps me very fit. I enjoy playing tennis as I can play with my father or my brother.
To sum up, sport is a very important part of my life, and I hope that I will continue to play sports for many years.

10 Form(2015)Extreme sports

Extreme sports

I’m going to talk about extreme sports and what the possible benefits and dangers are of participating in such sports. I will also express my personal opinion about extreme sports compared to other sports.

Extreme sports include activities such as snowboarding, hang gliding and ice climbing. They are usually done by individuals although white water rafting is an extreme sport that involves team effort. All extreme sports involve a high level of danger. The risk involved is controlled by the skill the person has and this is achieved through experience.

One of the benefits of extreme sports is that they bring new experiences. For example, they add excitement and adventure to your life. They are challenging because the participants compete against forces of nature and in doing so they experience an adrenaline rush. People also say that they like the feeling of being daring. They get a strong sense of freedom doing these sports, because overcoming the challenges is liberating. Clearly they are a great form of exercise and they can help you get fit too.

However, although extreme sports provide thrills, they can also be dangerous. The risk of injury is very high if athletes lose control. It is true, of course, that people can be quite badly injured just playing a friendly game of football. Injuries such as broken legs are not uncommon, but the risks involved with extreme sports are far greater. If you lose control of a hang glider and crash, it is very likely that you would break bones, injure your back or even get concussion. Falling from a great height, I think you would be very lucky indeed to escape serious injury.

Personally, I’d prefer not to do extreme sports, in spite of the fact that they look very exciting. Although I admire what some of these people do, I’m not very keen on the idea of doing something that is dangerous and carries a high risk of serious injury. I’d rather keep my feet on the ground and jump to put a ball in the basket along with my team. I prefer sport that has a set of rules to ensure the safety of the players. I think I will leave others to enjoy the challenge and risk of extreme sports.

10 Form(2015) Leisure Activities

Leisure Activities

I’m going to talk about the role of leisure activities in people’s lives. Most people’s lives are full of personal challenges. These vary from person to person according
to their circumstances but everyone feels stress at some time.To balance this, we need to spend time on leisure activities which help us relax. Doctors say that when we relax, our bodies can repair any damage the stress causes. Leisure activities such as team sports or clubs give us the opportunity to spend time with other people who share the same interest. We all need the support and friendship of other people and it is important to find time to develop our friendships and spend time with other people. If we do not do this we can become lonely and  feel isolated.

Not only are leisure activities a good way to socialise but they can also be educational; for example learning to play a musical instrument or a craft. Learning how to do it is interesting and can be fun and as we become more skilful we enjoy a sense of achievement. A skill can always
be improved and we can enjoy the pleasure of making something or playing music for ourselves and for others too.

I enjoy swimming and playing badminton, they keep me fit and make me feel full of energy. I also enjoy reading as it is a great way to lose myself in another world and forget about my problems. A good film also does the same and if I have been studying a lot I find watching a film very relaxing.

______________________________________________________________________________

Music helps people relax. It can help people change their mood. People can dance to music too.

Going to the cinema is a popular activity because it is like travelling to another place. The big screen totally involves the audience in the story being told.

Sport should be compulsory at school because children need to be taught how to stay fit and have
the opportunity to try different sports. That way they can choose an activity that they enjoy and continue it as a leisure activity and to stay fit and healthy.

Mass entertainment can be educational. There are many informative documentaries on television for example, from which we can learn so much about the world.

If I had more free time, the best thing to do with it would be to learn to play the guitar, which is
something I would like to do.

I don’t think I have enough free time these days because I have to study hard.
