8 Form(2015) Life in the 21st century and in the 1950s

Life in the 21st century is fast-paced and ruled by mobile phones, the Internet and gadgets, so it`s easy to understand why some people long to go back to the simpler times of the past. They like living in a 1950s time warp.

The 1950s were an era of colourful homes, clothes and accessories, black and white TVs, rock and roll music and traditional values. Some people choose to live as people did back then as only cherishing these times is not for them. They use retro decor in their houses which are full of second-hand vintage appliances. They buy authentic metal kitchen units. That`s why their houses look like a 1950s time capsule. What`s more, they try hard to bring the spirit of 1950s into the 21st century. So, they dress like people in 1950s. For example, women in clothes prefer pencil skirts, white blouses and wide belts. They also never leave houses without their bright lipstick on. Furthermore, they appreciate people. That`s why they look after their elderly neighbours and bake cakes for their friends. They avoid watching TV and reading newspapers as all the violence, greed and materialism make them shudder.

However, everybody admits to owning and using some 21st century conveniences. There are a lot of things which can`t be kept out of sight. We have an electric kettle, a fridge, a dishwasher and a microwave in our kitchen. Furthermore, we can`t imagine our life without surfing the Internet. Living without mobile telephones and TV seems bland.

To sum up, every era has its advantages. There is something special in our past while our present life is distressing at times.

Personally, I `d prefer to live in 1950s as I like being in retreat from the 21st century.  I like authentic old things and accessories like trilby hats and stylish suits. In addition, I respect the values of 50s, the “make do and mend” attitude that is so different from our age of throwaway fashion and ever-changing technology.

Personally, I `d prefer a fast-paced life of 21st century. I`m getting used to living with all modern conveniences such as laptops, washing machines and dishwashers. I adore ever-changing technology. Besides, I can`t imagine living without my mobile phone and the Internet as they help me communicate with my friends. I can always send a message to my parents when I have any difficulties.

10 Form (2015) Eating Out

Eating Out

Eating out is becoming more and more popular nowadays.Although, it has some
advantages and disadvantages .

To begin with, there are many reasons why people eat out. There are busy working couples who don’t want to think about preparing a meal and washing up after a long day at work. Then there are single people who don’t like to eat alone and prefer to go out with their friends, or business people who take their clients out for a meal. When people are away on holiday they often eat out and on the whole I’d say eating out is often a form of

entertainment. One of the main reasons many people go out for a meal is to celebrate a special occasion such as a birthday or an anniversary. Furthermore, some people like to eat out to try different foods from other countries.

There are many advantages to eating out. One advantage is the relaxing atmosphere of a restaurant. It’s a great place to unwind at the end of a busy day. Discussing business over a meal is a way to entertain clients away from the office and also a way to relax and get to know one another. For other people it makes a change from eating at home and it means they can have a choice of what to eat. On the whole, I’d say that having someone

else cook, serve your meal and clear up afterwards is a great reason for eating out. In addition, I think most people would agree that if we want to enjoy food from a different country, it’s best to have it cooked by people from that country and to enjoy it in a restaurant with the right atmosphere as well.

One of the negative points of eating out is that it can be expensive. Sometimes the quality of the food or the service may be poor. The expense is the main reason many people only eat out for special occasions. Of course, unless the restaurant has been recommended, you can’t be sure of the quality of the food or service and it may be disappointing or even disastrous. If a restaurant is popular it can also be noisy. In England,

smoking in restaurants is not allowed but in other countries people smoke in restaurants which is a problem for non-smokers.

As far as I’m concerned, I usually go out to eat with my family about once a month. We like to try new places occasionally, but my favourite place to eat is the Chinese
restaurant; I love eating with chopsticks.

8 Form (2015) Matryoshka dolls

Every country has traditional things, which are typical for its culture. Thinking of the USA everyone remembers jeans, potato chips and Coca-Cola. The story of these thingsgoes back to the past. Nowadays, they are popular all over the world. Jeans are a staple item of clothing in everyone`s wardrobe. What is more, potato chips are among the favourite snacks. Beside this, Coca-Cola remains the most famous soft drink in the world.

Visiting Russia foreigners can try dishes of traditional Russian cuisine such as borsch( that is soup made of beetroot). They can also buy some souvenirs, for example, wooden spoons. They are traditional folk musical instrument. Another famous souvenir is a matryoshka doll. It is very popular. There are a lot of small dolls inside one doll, each one smaller than the other. These wooden dolls are beautifully painted, often in bright colours. At the end of the 19th century in Russia Sava Mamontov was an industrialist and supporter of the arts. One of the artists who worked for him saw a Japanese doll. That doll had other dolls inside it/So, the artist decided to make something similar.SergeiMaliutin designed the doll and VasilyZvyozdochkin carved the 1st one in 1890. The dolls became famous worldwide when they won a prize at an exhibition in Paris in 1900.

All in all, there are fascinating souvenirs in every country. Buying something traditional we cherish our memories and share them with our friends  when we come back home.

8 Form (2015)Module 2 (Shopping)

Module 2 (Shopping)

Going shopping has become a popular pastime of many people. What is more, for some customers shopping in supermarkets has turned into a certain addiction as they spend a lot of money on the things they really don`t need. It happens so because supermarkets try to make their customers buy more using special tricks. Delicious smells, special offers, packaging, product placement, beautiful and colourful displays are intentionally used to tempt us into spending more.

The smell of freshly-baked bread and tempting displays of fresh produce make you feel hungry. Futhermore, no one can resist a “buy one get one free ” deal. It`s also easier to grab some pre-packaged apples. What`s more, supermarkets love moving their produce, so that you have to spend time walking and looking for what you want to buy.

To sum up, it is helpful to know that loose fruit and vegetables are usually cheaper than pre-packaged ones. It is also useful to know that people waste a lot of money buying more than they need because they can`t resist temptation of special offers. I would recommend to remember that and try not to buy at supermarkets extra items that you don`t really need.
