  • If you are driving, slow down smoothly and stop on the side of the road. Avoid stopping on or under bridges, power lines, trees. Stay in your car.
During a Volcanic Eruption
  • Listen to a local station on a portable radio for any emergency information and instructions from local authorities to know what to do.
  • If indoors, close all windows and doors to keep volcanic ash from entering.
  • If outdoors, take shelter indoors. Your safest place is indoors, away from various hazards.
  • Stay out of designated restricted zones.

Form 8 (2015) Earthquake

Earthquake
In contrast to hurricanes, earthquakes are difficult to predict. That’s why there are so many casualties during massive destruction. One of earthquakes happened in 2010. It was a terrible earthquake which struck the country of Haiti in the Caribbean. It was a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Three million people were affected. A lot of people were injured, died and 1 million people became homeless. Most of the buildings in the cities were destroyed. The consequences of it were so awful because the people were not warned that the earthquake was going to hit.
Since the earthquake efforts to bring the cities back to life have been made but the recovery is slow as Haiti is a poor country. One year later, only 5 % of the rubble has been cleared and there are still 1 million refugees living in tents.

8 Form(2015) Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina
Hurricanes are among the most dangerous natural disasters, though they can be predicted. They  often lead to massive destruction and a lot of deaths. One of them happened in August,  2005. It was a tropical storm formed over Florida, the USA. Then it strengthened and became Hurricane Katrina. It was one of the most powerful storms that had ever hit the Atlantic coast with winds of over 270 km per hour. The residents of the city heard about the tropical storm, but when the mayor declared a state of emergency, they knew they had to evacuate the city due to a great risk of flooding. When the eye of the storm missed the city, some people relaxed and thought it would be OK. Later the people watched the scenes on TV and saw the waters rise. So, they realised it would be best to leave and stay in temporary shelter until the danger passed. The people were begging for help and struggling to cope. They had to stay away until the army pumped the water out of the city. After that everyone went back to help rebuilt the city, including their own houses.

Form8(2015) A volcanic eruption

A volcanic eruption is very dangerous as it causes massive destruction as well as deaths. At first, a mountain is hit by an earthquake and the top of the mountain is blown off by an explosion which might be heard miles away. Huge blocks of ice and rock fall onto the surrounding area, then the tremendous heat inside is released. Hot ash and gas come out of the mountain, causing a lightning storm as it rises into the air. White ash, along with steam and thick mud, continue to pour from the giant crater left by the explosion.

At each stage of this dramatic eruption people are killed. The explosion causes the first casualties; people are injured or die due to the force and heat of it. Then the hot ash starts fires which burn vast areas of forest, causing more deaths. The volcanic cloud might be so large and dark that it seems day turns into night, forcing airports to close temporarily as pilots might fly their plane into a cloud, hit electricity cables and crash. Mud from the volcano runs down the mountainside and fills rivers, causing flooding. People living nearby are forced to leave their homes as the water continues to rise.

Form 8 Natural and Man-made Disasters

                                                                                                               September 2015

Natural and Man-made Disasters
Nowadays the humanity suffers from a great number of natural and man-made disasters. The scientific and technological progress has changed the life on our planet and, as a result, our natural resources are exhausted, the ecological balance of the planet is disturbed, many species of flora and fauna disappeared, pollution threatens everything alive. Man destroys the environment with arson, oil spills and the use of chemicals. However, the environmental problems are not the only ones. Every year thousands of people die because of natural disasters such as floods, tidal waves, droughts, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, avalanches and landslides. I think the biggest problem with natural disasters is that we can’t predict and avoid them in time.
