New Year and Christmas in Russia

New Year and Christmas in Russia
People all over the world celebrate Christmas and New Year`s Day. These holidays have special traditions. In Russia New Year`s Day is more popular than Christmas. It is the first holiday of the year. Everybody likes it very much. It is especially loved by little children. This holiday is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home when all relatives get together. There are lots of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree glittering with coloured lights and decorations.People put presents under the New Year Tree. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. The Russian Santa Claus is named Ded Moroz, or Father Frost. Accompanied by Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden, he brings presents to children to place under the New Year's tree. He carries a staff, wears valenki and is carried across Russia in a troika. At twelve o’clock at night people can see the president on TV who congratulates everyone. At this time people are sitting at the tables to their holiday dinner. Young people usually organise a dance party and have a lot of fun. Some of them go out into the streets and the squares. The next day friends usually come to wish a Happy New Year to all the members of the family. A renewed holiday in our country is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 7th of January. It's a religious holiday and a lot of people go to church services on that day. Svyatki, Russian Christmastide follows the celebration of Christmas and lasts until January 19. This two-week period is associated with pagan traditions of fortune telling. All people like New Year`s Day as it is the beginning of new life in new year and everyone hopes that the life will really be happy.

Form 6 Christmas

Form 6    Christmas
Winter is the time when people all over the world look forward to wonderful holidays Christmas and New Year`s Day. But the time they are celebrated is different in different countries. In Great Britain Christmas is more popular as it has a long history. On the 25th of December families get together to celebrate it. Everybody is happy to meet relatives and friends.
Some weeks before Christmas the shops are crowded as everyone buys Christmas presents. At Christmas people try to give their children everything they want. Most families have a Christmas tree in their homes. They decorate it with colourful lights, tinsel and toys. You can see Christmas decorations everywhere in the city. The streets and shop windows look wonderful.
On Christmas Eve women are busy preparing food, and children go to bed. They are told that if they don't go to sleep, Father Christmas will not bring them any presents. So children leave their stockings near their beds or hang them up somewhere in the room for Father Christmas to fill with presents. According to old tradition people put presents for all the family under the Christmas tree.
Singing Christmas songs is another old tradition. In England and other countries, groups of children go from house to house and sing Christmas songs, called carols. Some people give them money, sweets and small presents.
In the evening British people have Christmas dinner. They usually eat turkey, potatoes and traditional Christmas pudding. They have fun with crackers. The crackers go bang and inside you find small presents.
Christmas time is magic when all people believe in miracles and everybody is happy.

Form 6 Travelling

Form 6   Travelling
A lot of people all over the world are fond of travelling. Modern life is impossible without it. Every day people travel on business or for pleasure. They visit different cities and countries. Some of them prefer travelling by plane or by train while others choose travelling by ship or by bus. People also can travel by car or on foot.
Of course, travelling by plane is the fastest and the most comfortable, but it is the most expensive too. You can buy a single or return ticket in the booking office or you can book it. When you arrive at the airport you have to check in and pass the passport control. Then a customs officer asks you some questions and checks your luggage. After that you wait for your flight at a departure hall.
For many people going by train is the best way to travel. It is slower than by plane but it is cheaper. You can go to a railway station with your ticket a few minutes before your train leaves. If it is a through train you don`t have to change.
Travelling by car is interesting, because you can see many things in a short time. When you go by car, you don’t buy any tickets and you can take everything you need in your car. You can stop when you want, enjoy beautiful views and take pictures.
Active people like travelling on foot. They have to be strong as they carry all their things with them.
It is also exciting to travel by sea.  The voyage on board the ship is fantastic if the weather is nice.
When you travel you see other people’s lives, cultures and traditions. Travelling educates you and makes your life more interesting as you can learn more about the world we live in.
