New Year and Christmas in Russia
People all over the world celebrate Christmas and New Year`s Day. These holidays have special traditions. In Russia New Year`s Day is more popular than Christmas. It is the first holiday of the year. Everybody likes it very much. It is especially loved by little children. This holiday is considered to be a family holiday. It is usually celebrated at home when all relatives get together. There are lots of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree glittering with coloured lights and decorations.People put presents under the New Year Tree. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. The Russian Santa Claus is named Ded Moroz, or Father Frost. Accompanied by Snegurochka, the Snow Maiden, he brings presents to children to place under the New Year's tree. He carries a staff, wears valenki and is carried across Russia in a troika. At twelve o’clock at night people can see the president on TV who congratulates everyone. At this time people are sitting at the tables to their holiday dinner. Young people usually organise a dance party and have a lot of fun. Some of them go out into the streets and the squares. The next day friends usually come to wish a Happy New Year to all the members of the family. A renewed holiday in our country is Christmas. It is celebrated on the 7th of January. It's a religious holiday and a lot of people go to church services on that day. Svyatki, Russian Christmastide follows the celebration of Christmas and lasts until January 19. This two-week period is associated with pagan traditions of fortune telling. All people like New Year`s Day as it is the beginning of new life in new year and everyone hopes that the life will really be happy.
