8 Form (2016) Module 5 New Technologies in Education

Module 5     New Technologies in Education
New technologies are being introduced into the process of education nowadays. Lectures or lessons taking place on YouTube are gaining popularity as they are reaching a potential audience of millions. Many pupils, who are having trouble with any school subject, have to ask a teacher to tutor them. It can be done with the help of online clips and videos. It is especially helpful for students who are fallen behind at school or who have to miss school because of illness or another reason. Online teaching can keep them up with their classmates.

On You Tube, for example, they can watch such video lessons whenever they want and repeat anything they don`t understand at their own pace without feeling embarrassed. In such videos, a teacher explains a principle of a subject with just his voice and his scribbles on a digital sketchpad. It makes a complicated topic entertaining and easy to understand through informal, chatty style. It motivates pupils when they see the teacher stumble through a problem himself, overcoming occasional errors with learn-as-you-go approach. Many teachers already use this technology as a teaching resource. Not only lessons but also university crash courses can be delivered through the Net to everyone who finds video lectures and lessons more useful and comfortable than the usual lessons.

8 Form (2016)Module 5 Train your brain

Module 5                          Train your brain

Memory is our ability to store, retain and recall information in our brain. However, our memories sometimes let us down. Fortunately, there are a lot of creative tricks we can use to keep our memory in top form.
There are various techniques to remember things. For example, breaking down information into small chunks makes it easier to remember. Each chunk can be associated with something meaningful. You can also use word association or mnemonics to remember a list of things by making up a silly rhyme. What is more, a technique called “loci” is helpful. It uses the imagination to place the things, which we need to remember, in a room in our house. You simply walk around the imaginary room and remember the items we placed there. Also, you can improve your memory if you are well-organised.  You should put everything in its place. Furthermore, when you are trying to remember something, breathe slowly and deeply. It will help you learn new information as well as make you feel more relaxed.

All in all, everyone should experiment to see what works best for him/her as there are a lot of useful tips how to train our brain and improve our memory.

8 Form (2016) Module 6 Character Traits

Module 6       Character Traits
We live in the world full of different people with different characters. It makes our world unique and interesting. There are people all of us like and respect. They are trustworthy, sociable, fair, just, kind, generous and friendly. They are good friends and reliable people. However, people try to make friends with those who are different in character. Calm people often look for those who are energetic, creative and full of ideas. Together they are involved in exciting activities and have fun. Those who are energetic and risky prefer reasonable, calm and sensible friends to ask for advice and escape getting into trouble.
Nevertheless, there are a lot of people who are not loved by most of us. I mean whingers, bullies, killjoys, bigheads and nosy parkers. They may be upsetting, hostile and snobbish. So, it is necessary to know how to deal with them. For example, a gossip takes great delight in passing on bad news. To stop them, you shouldn’t listen to what they say. A bossy boots is always telling others what to do and how to do it. The best thing to do in his company is to stand up for yourself.

To sum up, no matter what kind of person you are dealing with, you should try to reach a compromise every time. It`s good that there are so many people with different characters because they teach us to be tolerant and self-confident in any company.

Form 8 (2016) Module 6 Adolescence

Module 6   Adolescence

Many teenagers don`t like what they see in the mirror as they see themselves in an unflattering way.Boys want to be tall and muscular while girls would like to be slim, even skinny. Of course, no one likes all those spots. Magazine problem pages are full of letters from teens who have a poor self-image. This is mostly due to puberty which changes the body and can cause acne and puppy fat. The body is preparing itself for adulthood to adjust to adult hormone levels. Teens become confused and anxious about their changing appearance. The media doesn`t help because models and film stars always look perfect and their photoshopped images set unrealistic ideals. So, it`s no wonder adolescents are made to feel inadequate and unsure of themselves. However, it`s important to realize that adolescence is a temporary stage. It is the time between childhood and adulthood, when a person grows and changes. So, we should resist the temptation to compare ourselves to others. We can change our diet and hairstyle but other things we have to accept. We should all learn to accept ourselves as we are and feel good about ourselves, then others will, too.

8 Form (2016)Module 3 Poverty

Module 3                                                Poverty

Nowadays there are a lot of problems in the modern society. People all over the world suffer from homelessness, illiteracy, war and racism. Moreover, there is a high rate of crime. People also face population growth and ageing population. That is why, poverty is on the increase.
Most of people who had a privileged childhood don`t have any idea of children in the slums. Children who live at home have plenty of love and affection. Their parents feed them, clothe them and put them through school, while thousands of street children live in appalling poverty and often don`t even reach the age of 18. The poverty leads to many broken homes and, if they experience violence at home or their families can`t look after them anymore, children end up on the streets. They sleep under bridges and in doorways. Those who can`t survive by begging, selling newspapers or shining shoes, often turn to crime to survive.  These children are not given even a basic education.  They are not taught basic skills such as hygiene and literacy as they don`t go to school. Some of them are eager to learn as they see learning as a possible way out of their lives of danger and destitution. Some volunteer groups work in makeshift schools. Working as a volunteer is a worthwhile experience which is eye-opening for everyone.
I think we should all help the poor. It`s a good idea to donate to charities. We can donate unwanted clothes and other items instead of throwing them away. I believe that no matter how bad conditions are, there is always hope for the future.

8 Form(2016) Module 3 The Elderly and the Homeless

Module 3 The Elderly and the Homeless
Before you abuse, criticise and accuse walk a mile in someone else`s shoes.
The city can be an unfriendly place at the best of times. Imagine then, how it might feel for the elderly or the homeless – people who are often marginalised by the rest of society.
The elderly sometimes feel incredibly embarrassed and lonely as if nothing about them is important except that they are old. They feel invisible and unwanted by society because people don`t want to talk to chatty senior citizens. Moreover, at the shops the assistants can be unfriendly as they can`t wait to get rid of them.
People also avoid looking at the homeless as they look terrible. Their eyes are red and puffy, their skin is pale and their hair is frizzy. In addition to this, they wear scruffy clothes. People are often rude to them. They are angrily told they have to leave if they walk into a café to use the toilet. People can become homeless because of family break-ups or terrible debts. Some people can`t get off the streets because they have no official identity.
We should remember that over the next 50 years, the number of elderly people in society will triple. We should treat them with respect because one day we will be old, too. The homeless also need our help, not our judgment. We could donate money to a homeless charity or volunteer at a soup kitchen.
